Genuine vs Fake Mobile Phones in Pakistan How to Identify Original Phones

Pakistan's mobile market is flooded with counterfeit and grey-market phones. Buying a fake smartphone can cost you thousands of rupees and leave you with no warranty or support. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to identify genuine mobile phones in Pakistan before making a purchase.

1. Check the IMEI Number

Every genuine phone has a unique IMEI number. Here is how you can verify it:

• Dial *#06# on the phone — the IMEI will appear on the screen.

• Compare it with the IMEI printed on the box and the back of the phone. All three must match perfectly.

• If they don't match, the phone is either fake, refurbished, or tampered with.

2. Verify PTA Approval (Crucial for Pakistan)

All legally imported phones in Pakistan must be registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

• SMS your IMEI to 8484 to check its PTA status.

• Alternatively, visit dirbs.pta.gov.pk or use the official DIRBS app.

• Note: Unregistered phones will be permanently blocked from all Pakistani cellular networks.

3. Inspect the Box and Packaging

Original phones always come in high-quality, premium packaging:

• The box should have holographic stickers and unbroken security seals.

• All text and logos should be crisp and clear — blurry printing is a huge red flag.

• In-box accessories (if included) should feel premium and heavy.

4. Check Software and User Interface (UI)

• Go to Settings → About Phone and verify that the model number matches the box.

• Fake phones often run modified or outdated Android versions with missing features.

• Check if the Google Play Store and official apps work correctly.

• Pro Tip: For Samsung phones, check the 'Samsung Members' app for device authenticity.

5. Buy from Authorized Dealers Only

The safest and easiest way to avoid counterfeit phones is to buy from authorized dealers who source directly from official distributors.

• Always ask for an official warranty card.

• Avoid suspiciously cheap prices — if a deal is too good to be true, it probably is a scam.
